Regenerative medicine is lightly regulated in practice, and quality varies widely. These eight checks help you separate careful providers from aggressive marketers.
1. Who Exactly Will Treat Me, and Who Supervises Them?
Ask for the names and credentials (MD, DO, NP, PA) of the people involved, and who the supervising physician is. Verify licenses on your state medical or nursing board website, and use the NPPES registry to confirm an NPI.
2. Are You Licensed in My State?
For telehealth, the clinician must be licensed where you are located during the visit. A provider claiming to serve "everywhere" should be able to explain exactly how.
3. What Is the Regulatory Status of What You're Offering?
Ask which treatments are FDA-approved and which are investigational. The FDA has not approved stem cell or exosome products for treating arthritis. Good providers say this up front. See the FDA's consumer guidance.
4. Where Do Your Products Come From?
For tissue-derived products, look for accredited tissue banks (such as AATB-accredited), donor screening, and sterility testing, and ask for the product's source in plain language. For compounded medications, ask which licensed pharmacy dispenses them.
5. What Will You Evaluate Before Recommending Anything?
Expect a real history and exam, imaging review for joint concerns, and labs where relevant. If a plan is offered before anyone looks at your records, be cautious.
6. What Are the Risks, Alternatives, and Realistic Outcomes?
You should hear about side effects, non-regenerative alternatives (including physical therapy or surgery), likely timelines, and the fact that results vary and aren't guaranteed. Be wary of promises like "100% success" or "avoid surgery for sure."
7. What Does It Cost, in Total?
Request a written breakdown covering the consultation, treatment, follow-up, and any membership fees. Ask whether insurance covers any part (most regenerative procedures are self-pay) and about refund and cancellation policies. Avoid high-pressure offers such as "today only" pricing.
8. How Does Follow-Up Work?
You should know how to reach a clinician between visits, what symptoms need urgent care, and how progress will be measured.
